Several AISE - West faculty members, and one enthusiastic parent, traveled to Luxor in early 2016 to run in the Egyptian Marathon! In fact, our very own Middle School Counselor, Ms. LizNoel Duncan won the woman’s marathon!!
The Luxor Marathon has been held for 23 years but still only attracts less than 200 participants. This may change, though, as it was recently recognized by Marathon Globetrotters and will be included included on their 2017 race schedule. Ms. Duncan happens to be the Marathon Globetrotters Africa Ambassador and I’m sure her success helped put the Luxor race on the world marathon map.
Ms. Duncan is also one of our cross-country coaches, along with Ms. Nicole Reid, Grade 1 teacher. Ms. Reid ran as well, completing the Half-Marathon and proceeding to run the last leg of the Marathon with Ms. Duncan. Sophie Sewailem, Grade 5 teacher, ran the Half-Marathon as well as, yours truly. An added plus was seeing one of our AISE - West parents there who completed the full Marathon. Another one of our teachers, Ms. Rebecca McCarthy, won the 12k race. All in all, it was a real community building experience, running through the Valley of the Kings, which could only happen in Egypt!
For us, this was not just a sense of accomplishment but also gave us a huge sense of satisfaction that we are modeling a healthy lifestyle for our students. For Ms. Duncan, this was her 50th Marathon!!! Congratulations to all those who participated. Thank you for being such great positive role models!
